What fasting blood glucose measures
Fasting blood glucose is the amount of sugar circulating in your blood after an overnight fast, typically eight or more hours without food. Because nothing recent is pushing it up, it offers a clean baseline reading of how well your body keeps blood sugar in check. It is the first-line screen clinicians reach for when assessing prediabetes and type 2 diabetes.
Why it matters
A rising fasting glucose is an early signal that insulin is struggling to do its job. The link between persistently elevated glucose and the long-term complications of diabetes — affecting the eyes, nerves, kidneys and blood vessels — is very well established. Catching the number while it sits in the prediabetic range is valuable precisely because that stage is often reversible.
The levers that move it
This is where everyday choices do real work:
- Cutting refined carbohydrates and added sugar — white bread, sugary drinks, confectionery — reduces the glucose load your body must manage. The evidence is strong.
- Viscous fibre slows sugar absorption. Beta-glucan, the soluble fibre concentrated in oats, has good evidence for blunting post-meal glucose.
- Legumes such as lentils, chickpeas and black beans have a low glycaemic impact and a solid track record.
- Whole grains like quinoa and brown rice in place of refined ones modestly improve control.
The Mediterranean diet and broader whole-food plant-based patterns are associated with better glucose regulation. Weight loss and regular physical activity are among the most powerful levers of all, often improving fasting glucose independently of diet.
A word on cinnamon: it is frequently promoted as a blood-sugar remedy, but the human evidence is weak and inconsistent. Enjoy it for its flavour, not as a glucose treatment.
The reference range
A fasting glucose of 70–99 mg/dL is generally considered normal, with the prediabetic range sitting above it. Read this as a reference point rather than a personal goal — interpretation depends on the full clinical picture, and a single value is best confirmed with repeat testing.
