What blood pressure measures

Blood pressure is the force your circulating blood exerts against the walls of your arteries, recorded as two numbers: the systolic pressure (the peak as your heart contracts) over the diastolic pressure (the resting trough between beats). It is one of the most diet- and lifestyle-responsive numbers in all of medicine, which is part of what makes it so worth understanding.

Crucially, a single reading is a snapshot in a moving picture. Pressure rises and falls across the day with stress, caffeine, posture and the simple act of being measured. Patterns over time matter far more than any one cuff reading.

Why it matters

Sustained high blood pressure is one of the best-established drivers of cardiovascular risk we have. The evidence linking elevated pressure to stroke, heart attack, heart failure and kidney damage is strong and consistent across decades of research. Because it usually causes no symptoms, it is often called a silent risk — which is exactly why a measured number is so useful.

The reference range

Optimal blood pressure is generally regarded as below 120/80 mmHg. Treat this as a broad reference rather than a personal target — your own ideal, and how readings should be interpreted, depends on your age, history and overall risk picture.
