What urinary oxalate measures
Urinary oxalate is the amount of oxalate your kidneys excrete over a 24-hour collection. Oxalate is a natural compound found in many plant foods and also produced by the body itself. The reason it is measured is simple chemistry: oxalate binds calcium, and when concentrations run high, the two can crystallise into calcium-oxalate kidney stones, the most common stone type.
Why it matters
For people prone to stones, urinary oxalate is one of several measured risk factors, and the association between higher excretion and stone formation is reasonably well established. That said, oxalate is only one piece of the puzzle — urine volume, calcium, citrate and sodium all feed into actual stone risk. The number matters most in context, and chiefly for those who have already formed a stone.
The levers that move it
The dietary picture deserves a balanced hand, not alarm:
- Dietary oxalate contributes to what you excrete. Some nutritious foods are naturally high in oxalates — notably spinach, beetroot and almonds. These are healthful foods, and the goal for most people is moderation and variety, not elimination.
- Pairing oxalate-rich foods with calcium is a well-supported tactic: calcium binds oxalate in the gut so less is absorbed. A source of calcium such as plain Greek yoghurt eaten alongside the meal can help.
- Generous hydration dilutes the urine and is one of the most reliable protective measures.
- Reducing sodium can lower urinary calcium and indirectly reduce crystallisation risk.
Drastically cutting healthy plant foods is rarely the right answer for most people; for recurrent stone-formers, individualised guidance is far more useful than blanket avoidance.
The reference range
A 24-hour urinary oxalate below 40 mg is generally taken as normal. Frame this as a laboratory reference rather than a personal target — what it means for you depends on your stone history and your other urine chemistry.
