Vitamin C for preventing and treating the common cold

Regular vitamin C did not prevent colds in the general population, but it halved the risk in people under heavy physical stress, such as marathon runners, and modestly shortened colds (by 8% in adults and 14% in children). Taking it only once a cold had started showed no consistent benefit.
