What serum uric acid measures

Serum uric acid is the level of urate circulating in your blood — the end-product of purine metabolism. Purines come both from your own cells and from food, and uric acid is what remains when the body breaks them down. Normally it dissolves in the blood and leaves through the kidneys; when it accumulates, it can crystallise in joints and tissues.

Why it matters

The headline concern is gout: when uric acid is persistently high, sharp urate crystals can form in a joint and trigger sudden, intense inflammation. The link between elevated urate and gout is well established. High levels are also associated with kidney stones and with broader metabolic risk, though here the evidence is more about association than proven cause.
